What’s wrong with Microsoft Exchange?
Nothing major, really. We support a number of clients running Exchange, and Exchange 2007 is a big improvement over previous versions. But… Exchange is typically twice as expensive to buy and maintain as Zimbra, doesn’t play as nicely as Zimbra does with mobile phones, lacks a number of useful features Zimbra has and doesn’t scale as well as Zimbra does either.
What does Zimbra have to offer that Exchange does not?
Aside from lower costs, better scalability and higher reliability, Zimbra has a number of beneficial collaboration features not found in Exchange. Zimbra includes a built-in wiki, a documents “Briefcase” and email conversation “threads” that enhance collaboration.
Zimbra also can authenticate against Microsoft Active Directory natively, so Microsoft shops looking for an in-house alternative to an expensive Exchange installation now have a choice. Zimbra also “presents” to Outlook as if it were an Exchange server, so die-hard Outlook users who don’t want the added benefits of the Zimbra Web 2.0 client (or the offline Zimbra Desktop Client) can still use Outlook.
Because Zimbra uses standard protocols, Zimbra talks natively to a variety of email clients, mobile phones, and other software applications like Salesforce.com. Need to check flight schedules? No problem! Zimbra includes a library of little applets (called “Zimlets”) that exchange data with other applications and public services. There is a free Zimbra SDK that enables developers to write their own Zimlets easily as well. Exchange simply can’t do all that.
