Why on Earth is it always called “Backup Software” when all anyone really cares about are the restores?
Why do so many companies think that just because they are taking backups that they have a real Disaster Recovery plan?
Why don’t more companies think about RPO/RTO objectives when designing their Disaster Recovery plan?
It is a sad fact that many of our clients first came to us in tears having suffered an outage which led to data loss — only to find their “backups” were not restorable in the timeframe they needed, nor as comprehensive as they thought.
It is also true that almost all of our clients require very short RPO/RTO goals (Recovery Point Objectives and Recovery Time Objectives) for their mission-critical applications.
After months of due diligence and testing on our own systems, we settled on Dell’s AppAssure (now called Rapid Recovery) suite for our Backup-As-a-Service Offering.
Features and Benefits
Rapid Recovery has a number of neat features which provide benefits to our typical client running mission-critical applications:
Archive static data to Microsoft Azure, Amazon S3, Rackspace, or any OpenStack provider.
Rapid Snap for Applications
Use incremental-forever snapshots to capture an entire application and its relevant state, up to every 5 minutes, for complete application and system recovery with near-zero RTOs and aggressive RPOs.
Restore operations near-instantly with an RTO of minutes.
Continually send updates to a virtual machine that can be activated in the event there’s an issue with the primary machine.
For clients in our CloudPlatform environment, Rapid Recovery provides a convenient method for enabling a comprehensive off-network Disaster Recovery plan, in the unlikely event that our data centers were to be hit by a meteor or some such (the data center guys hate when we say that…).
Other clients with a Hybrid Cloud deployment blending on-premises hosting with our CloudPlatform hosting also benefit from the shorter RPO/RTO options Rapid Recovery enables.
